Music that Engages and Rewards

Children and Opera

If your musical child is interested in performing and learning great music, Crescendo is unique in its inclusion of opera in its repertoire. Over the years, Crescendo has produced fully staged children's operas (Brundibar, Dido and Aenaes) and performed with University of Iowa Opera Theatre (Carmen, The Crucible, La Boheme), The Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre (Carmen, Falstaff, Suzannah, The Elixir of Love, Tosca). Nancy credits Beaumont Glass, former director of the UI Opera Program for showing her how enthusiastically children could embrace opera if given the opportunity to learn from a passionate teacher. Glass's enthusiasm was contagious, and his belief that opera was for everyone, including kids, was the inspiration for including opera in the Crescendo repertoire.

Crescendo Kids in the Community

Members of Crescendo have gone on to perform in other community productions, including solo roles in Turn of the Screw, Madame ButterflyAmahl and the Night Visitors, Chichester Psalms and The Magic Flute.
